Technology Licensing & Patent for Novel Antimalarial Drug Composition (Arjunetin + Artemisinin)

  • Prof.Sathyanarayana Gummadi Biotechnology

The Department of Biotechnology at IIT Madras, in collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), achieved a significant milestone by developing and commercialising a novel antimalarial formulation combining Arjunetin and Artemisinin. This innovative technology was developed by Prof. Sathyanarayana Gummadi and Gandarvakottai Senthilkumar Arumugam from IIT Madras, in collaboration with Prof. Shailaja Singh and Dr. Swati Garg from JNU.
The technology was successfully licensed to International Phytomedicine Innovation Private Limited, marking a strong collaboration between academia and industry. The research demonstrated promising in vitro and in vivo antiplasmodial activity, with arjunetin showing effectiveness at low concentrations without cytotoxic effects.
Additionally, the team secured a granted patent for the antimalarial composition and filed international patents, highlighting the global relevance and translational potential of the research. This achievement contributes to advancing accessible and effective malaria treatment solutions worldwide.
