The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) is one of the oldest departments at IIT Madras. Offering both Master's and Doctoral programmes, as well as electives for B.Tech and M.Tech students, the department boasts a well-balanced student-teacher ratio and comprises faculty from a wide range of related fields.

Message From the Head of Department
Welcome to the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. We are one of the foundational units of IIT Madras, established in 1959. We teach a range of courses in the subdomains of humanities and social sciences. We run three MA programs, namely, MA (English Studies), MA (Economics), and MA (Development Studies). We have a vibrant research program in the Department. We have a sizeable number of research scholars working with our faculty on a wide range of projects. We teach our courses to all the engineering students of this institute. We aim to work with colleagues in other departments to add social relevance to the scientific developments.
