Department of Computer Science & Engineering

Conceived in 1973 with the acquisition of an IBM System/370 (one of the most powerful computers in India at that time), the Department of Computer Science and Engineering now offers several attractive industry-sponsored Fellowships for outstanding PhD scholars, as well as support for participation in top-ranking international conferences. According to a 2014 Brown University study, IIT Madras was the fifth largest contributor of faculty members to computer science programs in U.S universities, including MIT, Stanford and Yale.

About the Department

The Department traces its origins to 1973, when it began as a Computer Centre with the acquisition of an IBM 370, which was among the most powerful computers in India at the time. Over the past five decades, the Department has grown into a vibrant centre of excellence in education, research, and technology development.

Our vision is "Global Excellence and Local Relevance in Research, Teaching, and Technology Development." In pursuit of this vision, the Department offers B.Tech., M.Tech., Online M.Tech., M.S., and Ph.D. programmes, providing students with a strong foundation in computer science along with opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research and technological innovation. Our mission is to educate globally competent computer science professionals, conduct internationally recognized research, and develop innovative technologies that address local and global challenges. Over more than five decades, the Department has produced a distinguished community of alumni who have made significant contributions and excelled in academia, industry, entrepreneurship, and research across the world.

Welcome to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Madras. The Department is proud to have a vibrant and diverse community comprising more than 800 students, distinguished faculty members, and dedicated staff.

The Department’s faculty members, together with their students and research scholars, pursue cutting-edge research spanning the breadth of Computer Science and Engineering — from systems to artificial intelligence and machine learning, and from theoretical computer science to emerging areas of computing.
