Research Programmes

IIT Madras is internationally renowned for the quality and diversity of its research. Research at IIT Madras is nurtured through various academic programmes run by the departments and through sponsored programmes funded by national organizations and the industry.

The Faculty along with the scholars of the various departments of Engineering, Science, Humanities and Management are involved in active research in frontier areas, which results in highly acclaimed International and National Journals and patents. They are also presented in International and National conferences. Our faculty have strong expertise on both theoretical and experimental methods of research.

Academic Research Programs

There are several opportunities available for research-minded students to hone their research skills and be part of pioneering research studies through Ph.D and M.S (by research) programmes.

Research is also carried out in the interdisciplinary areas among the Departments which may be pursued by the research scholars for the Ph.D & M.S (by research) degree.

The Engineering, Science, Humanities and Management departments together with the Research Centres of IIT Madras are equipped with excellent laboratories and facilities with state-of-the-art equipment.

Research is being carried out in many areas of topical interest such as Laser diagnostic applications, Non-destructive techniques, NMR spectroscopy, Solid state physics and micro-electronic devices, Nano-materials technology, Bio-technology, Bio-medical research, Bio-chemistry, Wireless Local Loop technology, Alternative Energy sources and Emission Control, Composite materials, Finite Element modeling, Photo elasticity, Structural Analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Ocean Engineering, Vibration & Acoustics, Rarefied Gas Dynamics, etc.

AICTE QIP

The Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) launched by the Government of India in 1970 endeavours to improve the quality of technical education in the country. The objective of the programme is to upgrade the expertise and capabilities of the faculty of the AICTE approved degree-level engineering institutions.

The main activities under QIP include providing opportunities to faculty to improve their qualifications by joining the Master and Ph.D programmes, organizing Short term courses and Curriculum Development Cell activities which help to improve class room teaching and learning.

The programme is now being implemented and monitored by the National QIP Coordination Committee (NQCC), funded by AICTE (a Statutory Body of the Government of India).

The major QIP Centres at IITs and IISc offer admission to Ph.D degree programmes in several disciplines. In addition, institutes recognized as the minor QIP Centres also offer admission to Ph.D degree programmes under QIP in some specific departments.

Prior to regular admission to the Ph.D programme at a QIP Centre, a candidate is required to join a pre-Ph.D contact programme. The duration of the pre-Ph.D program is 60 days (Advance Admission Scheme) and that of the regular Ph.D degree Program is 3 years.
