The centres will focus on developing state-of-the-art systems and technologies for autonomous operation of engineering systems and research in automation of marine operations.
Autonomous Systems and Technologies
Computationally efficient and robust algorithms for domain specific aspects like environment mapping and localisation, navigation in unstructured environments, decision making with reduced data sets/sensor information, multirobot coordination etc. Domain independent technologies for autonomous operation. This will include: Multisensorial generative and descriptive self-awareness models for autonomous systems, event-triggered control laws for multi-agent robotic network, efficient autopilot systems with robust controllers Application of artificial intelligence and data science for efficient cognition systems for autonomous operationDesign of novel autonomous robotic systems for domain specific applications like healthcare robotics (rehabilitation/elderly care/surgical robots), off-road vehicles for mining, agriculture etc., and underwater and aerial applications. Design and development of multimedium and multimodal robots for field applications.

Marine Autonomous Systems
Center for Marine Autonomous Systems (CMAS) aims to solve the challenges associated with the development of autonomous surface and underwater vessels and become a leader in the areas of autonomy for marine operations. The center will emphasize research on automation of marine operations that can have applications in both maritime industry and in the defence sector. The aim of the center is to enable interdisciplinary research in the areas of naval architecture, ocean engineering, control theory and artificial intelligence through rich collaborations between IIT Madras and international academic and industry institutions to become a world leader in this area.
