Hyperthermia treatment (HT) aims to selectively elevate the cancerous tumor temperature in the range of 40-44 °C typically for 60 minutes. It is a promising adjuvant treatment modality as it sensitizes tumor for conventional therapies such as chemotherapy (CT) and radiotherapy (CT) as shown in many clinical studies that combine HT with CT and RT. In cases of deep-seated tumors, such as locally advanced breast cancer (LABC), selective heating can be achieved using a microwave phased-array applicator with an integrated water bolus to prevent skin overheating. In microwave HT, patient-specific hyperthermia treatment planning (HTP) is performed to optimize phased array antenna excitations in order to achieve constructive
interference of microwaves at the tumor region. Many different HTP algorithms have been proposed in the literature but these algorithms are computationally expensive and complex for a clinical device. In our previous work we have designed and developed a microwave phased array applicator operating at 434 MHz for HT of LABCs and numerically validated its targeted heating ability on patient derived breast models. In this work, we propose a HT device for LABC, having phased array applicator, multi-channel microwave source integrated with an ergonomically designed patient bed along with a fast and efficient HTP algorithm.
