NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) based actuators find wide applications in a variety of engineering fields including aerospace, automotive, robotics, etc. A few of the aerospace applications include wing morphing, deployable control surfaces, control valves, release/latch mechanisms, positioning devices, etc. Majority of the SMA systems/prototypes currently in use are uni-axial linear actuators which make use of the alloy in thin wire form (straight or coil). The motion dynamics in engineering systems are complex and require actuators to deliver large and multi-axial forces. In order to achieve this SMAs in bulk form such as strip, rod, tube, ribbon, etc. are in demand. The research on the development of these bulk SMAs is still in nascent stage because of the limiting factors such as propriety fabrication technology, limited data on characterization and response of the material under various loading conditions etc. The present research work aims to study the processing and characterization aspects of NiTi SMA strips. The work would include strip fabrication, process optimization and improvement in strip properties, evaluation of transformation, mechanical, functional properties, and thermomechanical fatigue.
