Details

Axisymmetric turbulent jet is one of the canonical free shear flows whose experimental and computational studies help shape our knowledge of fluid turbulence. Two Large Eddy Simulations (LES) with different cell density distributions of an axisymmetric jet at a Reynolds number of 11000 were performed. Results of mean velocities, intensities, Reynolds stress, third order moments, turbulent kinetic energy budget and component energy budgets from both these studies are presented and compared with previously available experimental data and computational data. The studies reliably reproduces the turbulent dynamics present in an axisymmetric jet.

The data is further used to study intermittency and conditional statistics. At present, lot of studies are being done to characterize the Turbulent Non-Turbulent Interface (TNTI) in various flows using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). Here, the potential of LES to characterize the TNTI, the large scale structures in the interface and in the turbulent core of the jet are studied.
