Details

An important perspective of student engagement is defined as an individual psycho-social process. However, the exploration of intra-individual dimensions to enhance engagement has been rare. Similarly, studies to improve well-being using the intra-individual dimensions are scarce. This study conceptualizes the concept of inner development with the two intra-individual components, self-awareness, and self-regulation with an 18 hours inner development intervention developed to test its impact on student engagement and student well-being. This conceptualization is well-supported by two theories, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and strengths-based theory. 78 undergraduate students underwent the intervention which happened in two waves. The analysis of behavior withdrawal (ABA) design of the single case research has been used, with the analysis of data carried out using the visual analysis and statistical analysis using Tau-U measurements. Results of the study indicate that the inner development training has a medium to large effect on the student well-being and a small to medium effect on their engagement. With over 80% of the undergraduate students taking up the work route in India, futuristically, we expect the contents of the inner development intervention would enable the future employees with a series of tools and its understanding to have a positive impact on their work engagement and employee well-being.
