Skeletal muscles belong to the class of active materials composed of passive viscoelastic components and voluntary force-generating units functioning under electrical actuation. The interaction between the electrical activities and mechanical properties of muscle during voluntary contractions is responsible for controlled force output and overall muscle dynamics. Alteration in physiological states such as from non-fatigue to fatigue impacts the functional requirements of muscle. Resulting changes in the myoelectric characteristics have been observed to be influenced by the mechanical properties of the constituent tissues. The aim of this research proposal seminar is to quantify the myoelectric and mechanical characteristics of muscle using surface electromyography and myotonometry, respectively, under controlled fatiguing protocols, and explore their interactions.
