The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest departments at IIT Madras. It currently offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. It hosts a diverse and talented mix of students, technical staff and faculty members. With over 1000 students (undergraduate and graduate) and 60 faculty members, it is one of the largest mechanical engineering programs in India. Over the years the department has built a reputation for outstanding teaching and has nurtured a strong research program.
         The department houses excellent experimental and computational facilities, including the recently established high performance computing facility with access to the latest analysis tools. The areas of interest to faculty members span thermal engineering and fluid mechanics: fuel cells, porous media, atmospheric science, nano fluids, solar energy, heat transfer, hydroturbines, multiphase flows, IC engines, combustion studies, alternative fuels, CFD, refrigeration and air conditioning, cryogenic systems, gas turbines, high speed reacting jet flows, supersonic combustion, propulsion, and droplet combustion; design: fluid-structure interaction, finite elements methods, fracture mechanics, bearings, gears, design optimization, non destructive evaluation methods, condition monitoring, vibrations, non-linear dynamics, acoustics, fatigue, tribology, continuum mechanics, prosthetic devices; manufacturing: metrology, unconventional machining processes, statistical quality control, metal cutting, computer aided manufacturing; precision engineering and instrumentation: medical instrumentation, mechatronics. Collaborations both within and across departments exist. Faculty members are engaged in active research with partners from Government establishments and industry.

         The department consists of the machine design section, the manufacturing engineering section, the precision engineering and instrumentation laboratory and six thermal engineering laboratories. Postgraduate programmes are offered in three streams namely, design, manufacturing and thermal engineering. Over one hundred elective courses are offered to the graduate and post-graduate students.

         Apart from the regular B.Tech. (4 years), Dual degree(5 years), M.Tech.(2 years), M.S. (with emphasis on thesis) and Ph.D. programmes, the department offers, on a continual basis, a wide variety of short term intensive courses, user oriented programmes in automotive technologies, winter and summer schools and workshops for teachers from technical institutions, and for personnel from national laboratories and industrial establishments.
