Lochan, Managing Director and CEO, Sundaram Finance Limited, Prof. Saji Mathew, Head, DoMS, IIT Madras, Prof. Andrew Thangaraj, Chair, CODE, IIT Madras, Prof. Prathap Haridoss, Dean, Academic Courses, IIT Madras, Program Coordinators Prof. G Arun Kumar and Prof. Vipin B, DoMS, IIT Madras, and other stakeholders.

Career opportunities span sectors including manufacturing and construction, banking and financial institutions, IT and IT-enabled services, e-commerce, consulting, healthcare, and policy-making bodies. The programme also provides a strong foundation for higher studies, research, and entrepreneurial ventures.

Through this initiative, IIT Madras aims to create a new generation of professionals equipped with business acumen and analytical expertise to lead data-driven transformation across industries.

Addressing the launch event, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said, “The BS in Management and Data Science reflects IIT Madras’ vision of preparing learners for leadership in a data-driven world. By integrating management education with strong analytical foundations, this programme enables students to make informed, responsible, and impactful decisions across industries, while ensuring flexibility and access at scale.”

Offered as part of IIT Madras’ mission to make high-quality, future-ready education accessible at scale, the programme seeks to address the growing demand for professionals who can operate at the intersection of technology and management.

Further, Prof. Saji Mathew, Head, DoMS, IIT Madras, said, “This unique BS program in Management and Data Science aims to meet the growing industry requirements of management professionals with strong analytics skills. This program leverages the technology, management, and entrepreneurship ecosystem at IIT Madras. This inclusive program without barriers to age and distance is an initiative for high-quality data-driven management education.”

Graduates of the programme will be well-suited for roles such as Business Analyst, Business Consultant, Data Scientist, Economist, Financial Analyst, Operations Manager, Supply Chain Analyst, Marketing Analyst, and Strategy Consultant.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest Ms. Gangapriya Chakraverti, India Site Head and Managing Director, Ford Motor Company, said, “Today, what we are witnessing is not just the launch of another degree but a fundamental shift in how high-quality education is going to be delivered in the 21st Century. Today, as we launch this course, I believe this is a program that is a Business Degree of and for the Data Age. We live in a world where, increasingly, the lines between a tech company and a traditional company are almost non-existent. Regardless of your business, your most valued and valuable asset is not capital or people, but your data. But any data in a vacuum is useless. It requires management and the ability to ask the right questions, the ability to lead teams, and the ability to make ethical decisions. This is where the strength of IIT Madras comes in.”

Guest of Honour Mr. Rajeev Lochan, Managing Director and CEO, Sundaram Finance, said, “We live in a time where two powerful forces are at work simultaneously. First the world of technology, digital and data is disrupting every industry. The second is the imperative for lifelong learning. We just need to stay ahead of the curve all the time. This imperative for lifelong learning is something that we have to deal with in the 21st Century. When these two forces come together and India wants to progress towards the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’, there has to be tectonic shifts in the way we think about education and the way education is delivered.”

The BS (Management and Data Science) follows a hybrid learning model with high academic standards. Courses are delivered through recorded lectures by IIT Madras faculty, enabling learners to study at their own pace, complemented by live interactive tutorial sessions, case discussions, and continuous academic support through online forums.

Examinations will be conducted on Sundays to accommodate working professionals and students. Depending on the course, exams may be held at designated examination centres across India or conducted online with remote proctoring.

The programme is open to anyone who has completed Class 12 or an equivalent qualification, including diploma holders. There is no age limit or seat restrictions. Learners can pursue the programme as a standalone degree, or alongside another academic programme, or while being employed.
