Since its inception in 1959, the Department of Civil Engineering has grown into a full-fledged department with nationally and internationally acclaimed academic programs. Specialising in Planning, Design, Construction and Management, the department strives to be a pioneer in the country for teaching, research and consultancy in existing and emerging areas of civil engineering.

Message From the Head of Department
The Department of Civil Engineering started with the inception of IIT Madras, and has grown today to one of the largest Civil Engineering programs in the country in terms of number of faculty and students.
World-class laboratory and computing facilities, coupled with faculty having valuable industry and academic experience in India and abroad, have made our program among the best in the world.
We strive to work on cutting edge technologies to tackle global challenges in construction, infrastructure, transportation, pollution, water supply and management.
