Residential programmes
M.A. (Integrated): Duration – 5 Years
This five-year program, open to students after class XII from diverse streams, aims to produce well-rounded individuals with sound training in the humanities and social sciences to answer the needs of universities, research institutes and commercial and public sector enterprises. The program draws its strength from the unique mix of streams. Two streams offered are an Integrated M.A. in Development Studies and an Integrated M.A. in English Studies.
Admission to the M.A. programmes are through HSEE.
M.Sc: Duration – 2 Years
The two-year M.Sc offers a master degree to students in the fields of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Admission to the M.Sc programmes are through the JAM examination. Details on the eligibility criteria is available on the GATE/JAM website.
M.Tech: Duration – 2 Years
The four-semester M.Tech. programmes offered in various Disciplines and Programmes by different departments of the institute are based on the credit system and provide a student with a wide choice of courses. Each programme comprises several core and elective courses and project work and has a faculty advisor to help the students in the choice of academic options for elective courses. Students may be permitted to do their project work in industries and other approved organizations.
Admissions to the M.Tech programmes are through GATE. Eligibility criteria for GATE qualified candidates are available on the M.Tech Admissions website.
MBA: Duration – 2 Years
The Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme is a two-year, full-time, seven quarter program aimed at training graduates to become capable managers. Students are provided a well-rounded learning experience in terms of management theory and actual practice. The programme involves classroom teaching, case discussions, hands-on management internship in industry and project work. The programme structure is such that students can join the industry at the same time with their peers from other business schools.
The MBA programme admits regular students with CAT score, Company Sponsored candidates, Defence Personnel, Non-Resident Indians and Foreign nationals.
Continuing Education Programmes
AICTE Sponsored QIP
The Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) sponsored by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is aimed at enhancing and upgrading the expertise and capabilities of faculty members of the AICTE approved degree-level engineering institutions. The programme, launched by the Government of India in the year 1970, is now implemented and monitored by the National QIP Coordination Committee (NQCC) funded through AICTE.
The major QIP Centres at IITs and IISc offer admission to Master degree programme in several disciplines. In addition, institutions recognized as the minor QIP Centres also offer admission to Master degree programme under QIP in some specific departments.
The duration of the Master Degree programme is 24 months.
EMBA Programme
The Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) at Department of Management Studies (DoMS), IIT Madras is a two-year degree programme that equips mid- career working professionals with functional foundation, integrative perspective knowledge and global leadership skills to lead a modern business organization.
EMBA is designed for blended weekend learning and enables working professionals to make strategic investment in their careers while they continue to meet their job demands.
Web-enabled M.Tech Programme
The Web-enabled M.Tech programmes of IIT Madras are User Oriented M.Tech Programs for professionals from industries which can be completed at their own pace. These programmes can be attended by candidates from their places of work in the evenings; and offer adequate opportunity for student-teacher interaction through effective course management systems. The programmes include approved core courses in addition to elective courses, laboratory courses and projects as per the curriculum of the concerned program. Certificates are awarded on completion of each course in the program. The M.Tech degree is awarded on completion of the required credits in different categories.
The Senate approved Web-enabled programmes are: M.Tech (Automotive Technology), M.Tech (Communication Systems Engineering), M.Tech (VLSI), M.Tech (Information Security), M. Tech (Mathematical Methods for Aerospace Engineers), M.Tech (Aero Dynamics & Aircraft Performance) and M.Tech (Industrial Metallurgy).
