The incidence of skin diseases has increased tremendously in the past decade. There is a growing demand for research toward non-invasive analysis of skin tissue, particularly for the assessment of tissue damage and repair. Recent development in the near-infrared laser scattering technique, such as optical coherence tomography has given a new window of research for non-contact imaging and reconstruction of tissue images. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a type of optical imaging modality that brings about a high-resolution, cross-sectional tomographic imaging of the internal microstructure in biological systems and materials by measuring backscattered light.
The primary objective of this study is to develop optical fibre based Optical Coherence Tomography system for the noncontact skin tissue analysis in the sub dermal portion of skin in the near infrared region. Initially the tissue mimicking phantoms are prepared and perform transmission studies. Fiber based Polarization Sensitive Optical coherence tomography (PSOCT) is set up for the analysing the birefringence of the materials as well as for the skin.
