In linguistically heterogeneous higher educational institutions, the language strategy employed has not been extensively explored. This research aims to address this gap by investigating the challenges persistent in multilingual higher educational spaces concerning English language learning and usage. The study further endeavors to propose effective teaching strategies and resources tailored to linguistically and culturally diverse college students. The research will focus on two main participant groups. Firstly, students aged between 18 and 40, enrolled in the preparatory and zero-level English programme at IIT Madras. Secondly, 60 staff members aged between 18 and 40, working at the headquarters of the National Programme for Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM). To gain comprehensive insights, qualitative research methods will be employed, including surveys, interviews, field notes via ethnography and participant observation, assessment results, participant feedback, and content analysis of written samples. The study's ultimate objective is to develop a comprehensive understanding of language-related issues in higher education within multilingual and multicultural settings. The research seeks to answer the overarching question: "How can higher educational institutions in multilingual India provide culturally and linguistically diverse students with appropriate English language education?" By shedding light on the language strategies adopted in diverse higher educational contexts, this research intends to make valuable contributions to the field of language education and offer practical recommendations for educators and institutions facing linguistic heterogeneity challenges.
