Pearlitic steel is extensively used in various energy-related fields, including oil and gas industries and transportation systems like railways, marines and bridges. Two important factors can significantly affect the performance and longevity of components made up of pearlitic steel. First is the exposure to different corrosive environments during service. Second, is the ingress of hydrogen into the components either during the manufacturing process and/or during the repair process. To address the former, we study the electrochemical behaviour under two distinct environments: 3.5 % NaCl and acid rain with a pH (4.5) and estimate the corrosion rate. Next, we use the electrochemical hydrogen permeation technique to study the diffusion behaviour of hydrogen in pearlitic steel and estimate the apparent diffusion coefficients. We use single and multiple transient methods to analyse the role of various traps present in the microstructure on the estimated diffusivity. Furthermore, the influence of the thickness fo the sample used in the permeation experiments on the estimated diffusion parameters is also studied.
