Rolling element bearings are used in several industrial applications to transmit loads between parts having relative rotational motion. There exists certain applications where the bearings need to operate at very low speeds and at the same time transmit heavy loads. Examples of such applications are Construction machines, Cranes, Rotary turntables and Wind Turbines. These bearings are sometimes referred to as slewing bearings. Static capacity of bearings have traditionally been determined based on allowable contact stresses, fatigue life or deflections. The present study additionally considers stresses evolving from ellipse truncation as a parameter to determine the static capacity for slewing bearings. An analytical simulation has been prepared based on previous literature; and stresses from ellipse truncation have been calculated based on empirical equations. The static capacity may be defined either in terms of maximum stress from ellipse truncation or value of ellipse truncation. This approach allows quick calculation for static capacity, and allows for a larger static capacity compared to previous methods.
