Details

Total Fringe order Photoelasticity (TFP) uses a single isochromatic image of the application specimen acquired under white light for its whole field fringe order estimation. This is achieved by matching the colour information of the application image with that of a calibration table through a set of processes. A sensitivity analysis of the processing parameters is carried out for problems with uniform fringe gradient. For industrial applications, one can minimise the generation of specific calibration tables for each experiment by transferring the colour characteristics of the application image to the calibration table by colour adaptation techniques. The lacuna in the existing colour adaptation techniques is identified and a new colour transfer method is developed. Being a single image based method, TFP has proved to be extremely useful for evaluating dynamic phenomena where one would require only isochromatic information from the field, such as determination of stress intensity factors (SIF) in dynamic fracture analysis. The utility of TFP to study the effect of macro pores on crack propagation is presented and the challenges in evaluating the complex fringe field yielded by stress field interaction between the flaws is identified. The requirement for an exhaustive parametric study in TFP for such fringe fields is recognised. The limitation of the current scanning map is brought out and the need for a new map for evaluating complex fringe patterns is proposed.
