Pedicle screw fixations are widely used for the treatment of spinal pathologies, as it provides support and improves stability. The effectiveness of treatment depends on the anchorage strength between the screw and bone. In this study, the influence of commonly used pedicle screw fabrication materials such as magnesium alloy, titanium alloys and stainless steel on anchorage strength is analysed. Further, the effect of geometric parameters such as screw half-angle and thread width on the displacement of fixation and stress transfer are analysed using a 2D axisymmetric finite element model. Additionally, the final pedicle screw design is analysed for performance in different bone qualities, such as osteoporotic, osteopenic and normal conditions, at various post-operative recovery time. The key results of the study will be discussed in this seminar.
