Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous materials/coordination polymers have been extensively studied in different field of science such as catalysis, gas storage and separation, sensing, luminescence and energy storage & conversion.1 Recently, transition metal MOFs (TM-MOFs) have been extensively used in energy storage and conversion applications owing to its high surface area and tunable porosity.2 However, their low thermal and structural stability retard its large scale application in energy storage and conversion. Consequently, lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) facilitate higher coordination number as compared to TM-MOFs, hence provide thermal and structural stability. Ln-MOF mediated conversion of environmental pollutant CO2 by electrochemical approach has been regarded as a promising strategy to recycle it and simultaneously address the energy demands as well as circumvent environmental pollution.3
In this seminar, some of the important findings in the literature will be discussed. Further, synthesis of 3D and 1D lanthanide (Sm, Ce, La and Eu) based MOFs and their application as charge storage materials as well as electrochemical reduction of CO2 to C1 (CH4, CO, HCOOH, CH3OH) and C2+ (C2H4, CH3CH2OH) products will be presented.
