CreditsNiladri PhD, Mechanical Engineering

IIT Madras Institutional Human Ethics Committee (IITM-IHEC) reviews and approves academic research projects handled by IIT Madras Faculty only, which involve the participation of human subjects and Volunteers.

The Committee operates as per the "Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) National Ethical Guidelines for Biomedical Research involving Human Participants",  https://icmr.nic.in/sites/default/files/guidelines/ICMR_Ethical_Guidelin... and the “Medical Devices Gazzett 2019”   http://egazette.nic.in/WriteReadData/2019/213308.pdf rules. It is mandatory for the IIT Madras Faculty members to secure an IEC clearance for the projects involving Human participants before the start of a research project.

The need for Institutional Human Ethics Committee(IHECs) in medical and academic research establishments resulted from the realization that affirms human rights as a prerogative of all members of the society. Individual physicians, academic and technical researchers may not be able to do what is right in all instances as evidenced by the number of cases on record.

IITM-IHEC office will send an announcement for the upcoming meeting a month prior to the scheduled meeting.

IITM Faculty will have to submit one hard copy of their duly signed application in the prescribed format along with the required documents against the announcement to the IHEC office at BT101, Block-I, Department of Biotechnology, IIT Madras.

Additionally, the faculty member should e-mail the completely filled application form along with required documents as a single PDF file to iec@iitm.ac.in

The received application would be sent for technical and ethical review and the comments received on them would be communicated to the faculty member/principal investigator.

If required, concerned faculty/PI would be asked to address the concerns in front of the committee in person.

No requests of students or post-docs presenting the study on behalf of the faculty member could be entertained.
