The Department of Chemistry is one of the first to function after IIT Madras was founded in 1959. Since then, the faculty has set up three different research centres for nanoscience, catalysis research as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy. Today, the department stands among the best in India for teaching and research, and is well recognized across the world through its Alumni. Several alumni have excelled in their chosen professions and many have been recognised by IIT Madras as Distinguished Alumni.

Message From the Head of Department
The Department of Chemistry is one of the first departments to function after IIT Madras was founded in 1959. The Chemistry Department holds No. 2 rank in the country among Chemistry Departments based on Nature Index Ranking, and No. 4 rank based on QS World University Rankings. The Chemistry Department offers BS in Chemistry (4-year UG program & upgradeable to 5th year MS in Chemistry), M. Sc. in Chemistry and Ph.D. in Chemistry. Our 34 faculty members and five emeritus professors work in all disciplines of Chemical Sciences. Our department is well-equipped with all the necessary instrument facilities to carry out any kind of cutting-edge research in the area of chemical sciences.
