In the vast ocean of Indian literature, the French expression is almost a non-existent island. Why should we write in French? What does France have to do in British colonized India? Memory is short and the history of this clod of land is still unknown. And yet, the French have lived and ruled Pondicherry, Karikal, Mahe, Chandernagore and Yanaon for more than two centuries. What really happened for this literature to be invisible, unread and hardly written? And even if it did exist, why is it not known? Through this discussion, I would like to explain and question at the same time why this literature has a hard time seeing the light and being accessible to a wider public. In the process I also ask as to who must write these stories and what mode of writing should one adopt to make available these hidden histories.
