Theatre has taken its place within a broad spectrum of performance, connecting it with the broader forces of ritual and revolt that thread through so many spheres of human culture. From the rise of realism in the 19th century to the experimentation that began in the war-stricken 20th century, theatre continuously changed, reflecting and responding to its social surroundings. It aspired to speak to and for everyone. Even after the advent of film and the first decades of television (but before the internet), theatre continued to be a major forum of public discourse. In India, transgender community members started to use theatre as an effective medium to voice their concerns about living in a society marked by high levels of homophobia. Although the practice of addressing their problems through theatre has been existent for a long time now, research on these theatrical collaborations is almost negligible. Other than a few articles primarily centered around Gay and Lesbian theatre productions, doctoral theses and papers studying the theatrical productions of transgender community members do not exist. This thesis addresses this gap and seeks to learn from and simultaneously shed light on transgender theatre groups and their presentations, particularly from the south Indian states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
