In this second seminar, the work presented on the Smoothed Finite Element Method (SFEM) in the first seminar, is further extended to axisymmetric and three dimensional problems. SFEM methods can provide easy and efficient solutions to some practical problems where the conventional FEM faces challenges. The auto generated linear four noded tetrahedral elements are used to discretize complex geometry solids. The implementation of different SFEM techniques in commercial software, Abaqus will be discussed. The efficacy of the approach is demonstrated with a design of a gasket for leak proof flanged bolted joints for sea water piping and contact pressure estimation in a tyre.
