Overview
IIT Madras offers four-year BS programmes that aim to provide quality education to all, irrespective of age, educational background, or location. The programmes are carefully designed to impart industry-relevant skills through rigorous coursework, hands-on training, and projects. Recognising the high demand for a skilled and knowledgeable workforce in specific domains, the programmes have been designed in consultation with industry leaders. The graduates of this programme will have strong fundamentals and industry-ready skills, ensuring high employability.
Operating Model
The content in BS programmes is delivered online, whereas the quizzes and exams are conducted in person at exam centres across India and abroad. This allows students to learn from anywhere, irrespective of geographical location. The in-person exams ensure academic rigour and fairly assess the quality of training. The curriculum, academic rigour, and quality of the programme are on par with regular degree programmes offered by IIT Madras.
The BS programme has multiple levels, providing students with the flexibility to exit at any of them. Depending on the courses completed and credits earned, the learner can receive a Foundation Certificate from IITM CODE, Diploma(s) from IIT Madras, or BSc/BS Degrees from IIT Madras.
Currently, IIT Madras is offering four such BS programmes:
- BS in Data Science and Applications
- BS in Electronic Systems.
- BS in Aeronautics and Space Technology.
- BS in Management and Data Science.
BS in Data Science and Applications
Decision-making is increasingly becoming data-driven in organisations. This involves analysing large volumes of data to identify patterns and build models. This requires a combination of skills ranging from computing, statistics, and mathematics, and is broadly called data science. There is a huge gap between the demand for data scientists and the supply of suitably qualified applicants in the job market. The BS programme in Data Science and Applications aims to create thoroughly trained professionals with expertise in programming, application development, data sciences, and machine learning. BS in Electronic Systems
Electronic systems are at the heart of almost all modern engineering systems. By acquiring the fundamentals and skills, one will be in a position to serve the automotive, consumer electronics, space, mobile, medical electronics, and defence industries as an electronic or embedded system design and development engineer. There is a huge growing demand in this domain. The BS degree in Electronic Systems has been started with the growing demand for skilled graduates in the electronics and embedded manufacturing sector in India in mind. This programme is open to anyone who has completed Class 12 or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics as part of their curriculum. Students of the BS in Electronic Systems must visit the IIT Madras campus for lab work for 1 to 2 weeks every semester.

BS in Aeronautics and Space Technology
This degree builds expertise in the design of aircraft and spacecraft systems and subsystems. It prepares students for careers in the aviation, defence, and space sectors, equipping them with strong technical and analytical skills. This program provides skill-based training in aeronautics & space technology, equipping students with the analysis and design tools commonly used in the industry, along with the basic theory behind them. This training in design and analysis tools will enable those with a non-aero background to enter any industry working in aeronautics and space technology. This programme is open to anyone who has completed Class 12 or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics as part of their curriculum.

BS in Management and Data Science
