Description: Introduction to different types of field equations encountered in engineering, Approximate methods of solution in space and time, Variational formulation, Integration of the variational formulation of yield symmetric and unsymmetric forms of problem formulation, Relative merits of alternate formulations. Formulation of element stiffness matrix for simple one or two dimensional linear problems. Introduction to the formulation of nonlinear stiffness matrices, Techniques of assembly of stiffness matrices to form global stiffness matrix. Solution techniques for solving matrix equations, Simplified procedures for solving for symmetric stiffness matrices, Generalized procedures for solving equations with nonsymmetric matrices. Time integration techniques to solve dynamic problems, Methods of solution to trace nonlinear load deformation curves. Application to plasticity, nonlinear material deformation, thermomechanical problems and fracture.
