The Central Electronics Centre (CEC) was established in 1971 within IITM with theobjective of servicing and maintaining awide variety of sophisticated electronic equipment. The need for training service engineers for maintaining the electronic equipment was felt and an 18 month training program was started in the same year. Since then, conducting such training program has become one of the important activities of the Centre. The significant advantage, this Centre has over other similar organisations is the mixed environment, i.e. a blend of academic environment and industrytype working atmosphere.

This Centre is housed in a dust-free (500m2 ppm) environment. The infrastructural and equipment facilities have been adequately strengthened over the years by successive collaborative Indo-German Projects. The Centre has a team of qualified, experienced and talented staff members, trained in Germany in various fields of electronic instrumentation. The Centre has lent its expertiseto more than 220 industries and other organisations in and outside the country.

In the area of Renewable Energy too, this centre has been playing a key role by conducting a several Training Programs in the area of Solar Photo Voltaics (SPV). SPV Laboratory facilities have been established and Solar Photo Voltaic Park has been developed to promote the developmental activities in this area.

In 2001, this Centre received ISO 9001:2000 Quality Certification from RWTV, Germany. This Centre offers Testing and Calibration services in accordance with ISO 17025 guidelines. CEC has receieved NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) accreditation both for its Testing laboratory and Calibrartion laboratory. Both the laboratories were audited in February 2004 by subject experts, as nominated by NABL.
