Admission Procedure for Foreign Students

1. Programmes of Study and Eligibility Requirements

Applications of Foreign Nationals nominated by the Government of India under scholarship

scheme and self-financing foreign nationals shall be entertained for all the programmes of the Institute.

Admission Criteria

(i) For undergraduate students :

Foreign nationals [Foreign passport holder or have either Person of Indian Origin (PIO) or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) interested in pursuing their undergraduate studies at IITs i.e. B.Tech. and Dual Degree have to appear Paper-1 of JEE (Main) conducted by CBSE. Please visit: www.jeemain.nic.in. Only top 1,50,000 candidates (including all categories) who qualify in Paper-1 of JEE (Main)-2013 will be eligible to appear for JEE (Advanced)-2013. Admission to IITs will be based only on category wise All India Rank (AIR) in JEE (Advanced)-2013, subject to the condition that such candidates are in the top 20 percentile of successful candidates of their Boards in respective categories. Foreign nationals interested in pursuing their undergraduate studies at IIT Madras for 5 years integrated M.A programme have to write Humanties and Social Sciences Entrance Examination conducted by IIT Madras. For details please visit: www.hsee.iitm.ac.in The qualified foreign nationals will be given seat on supernumerary basis.

(ii) For postgraduate students :

Foreign Nationals can seek admission to various Post-graduate and Research

Programmes under the following categories:

Self-financing Students (Full Time Programme)

Cultural Exchange Fellowship Programmes (Govt. Of India)

Foreign Nationals seeking admission in any one of the aforesaid categories will have to satisfy       the minimum eligibility criteria for admission to the programmes as prescribed by the Institute.

All the foreign nationals have to fulfill the following conditions:

Admission Procedure

(i) For post-graduate programmes (M.Tech.) under Self-financing category:

The Foreign Students, who wish to join under Self-financing category, are required to submit their application to the Deputy Registrar [Academic]. These applications are scrutinized by the respective department of IIT Madras. The respective student / Embassy (with a copy to the student concerned) will be informed about the Institute decision. However, in case of students from restricted countries i.e. Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Bangladesh & Sri Lanka, the application MUST be forwarded through their respective Embassy.

(ii) Foreign Students with ICCR Scholarship (Government of India) candidates desirous

of admission under this Fellowship Programme are required to apply through the

Indian High Commission/Embassy as the case may be, in their respective Countries. They will send the application to ICCR Government of India and then ICCR will forward the application/s to our Institute for consideration. In case the applicant is found suitable for admission, admission offer letter will be sent to him/her through Indian Council for Cultural Relations, New Delhi. Not eligible for getting any financial assistantship from the Institute.

(iii) Visiting students (Under MoU / Non-MoU)

Foreign Nationals registered for a degree in a recognised Institute/University who is officially sponsored by that Institute/University to carry out Course work / Research or to avail himself a laboratory or other facilities at IITM for a period of not exceeding two semester can be accepted as visiting students under the MoU or otherwise. Admission of foreign Nationals under the MoU will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions spelt out in the MoU agreed to between IITM and the Country/ University/Institution concerned. Students have to bear the normal living expenses boarding, lodging and travel expenses. Accommodation will be provided in Hostels on payment basis (approx. Rs.15,000/- per semester). No tuition fee will be levied from the students who are coming under MoU.

Visa requirements

It may also be noted that the student who is finally admitted to the institute must have passport clearly showing a student Visa for M.Tech. & other post graduate Programmes and Research Visa for Ph.D. Programme/Provisional student Visa for visiting students. In case of students from the restricted countries, the student / his respective Embassy should forward, before joining the Institute, the clearance and No Objection Certificate from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Secondary & Higher Education to the Academic Section of IIT Madras (without the NOC and Ministry clearance, admission will not be confirmed). The Academic Rules & Regulations applicable to Indian students with regard to eligibility and evaluation are applicable to Foreign Students also; as outlined in the brochures (please see http://www.iitm.ac.in).

 

Documents required:

 

1.1 At the time of submitting the application

· All the foreign nationals should submit their application, along with the processing fee, on prescribed format which can be freely downloaded from the website http://www.iitm.ac.in.

· The applications of scholarship-holding Foreign Nationals (under various schemes) should be routed through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations / Ministry of Human Resource Development (Department of Education), Govt. of India, New Delhi. The antecedents of the candidate will be verified by the forwarding Agencies/Ministry.

· They should hold a valid foreign passport.

· That they have adequate knowledge of English as per the requirements of the programme.

 

1.2 At the time of admission

· They have valid Residential permit in India granted for studies or a Student Visa for the prescribed duration of the concerned programme.

· They fulfil the minimum eligibility requirements as per section 1.4.

 

1.3 General

· The Degrees/Certificates of the candidates must have been recognized and approved by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) / Commonwealth Universities / International Association of Universities (IAU) as equivalent to the corresponding Indian Degrees/ Certificates.

· All the eligible foreign nationals are required to fill up the Registration Form prescribed by the Institute at the time of admission.

· The applicant should have completed 17 years of age; there is no maximum age limit for foreign nationals.

· The inter-se merit among the applicants of various foreign nationals will be decided by the Institute which shall be deemed as final.

· Last date for submission of Applications by Foreign Nationals is 31st March every year for forthcoming academic session (excepting for B.Tech/Dual Degree).

· The applications should be forwarded to the Deputy Registrar (Academic), IIT Madras, Chennai - 600 036, India.

1.5 Payment of Fees

All selected foreign nationals will be required to pay fee as follows:

(a) US $ 2000 (tuition fees) + US $ 261 (towards one time fee, deposits and application cost) for SAARC Countries

(b) US$ 4000 (tuition fees) + US $ 261 for other Countries for full time students

(c) Hotel fee : Rs. 17,000/-(approx.) per semester

 

1.6 General Notes

Candidates admitted to any Course/programme in IIT Madras shall not be eligible to pursue simultaneously any other full-time Course in this or in any other University/Institution. If the applicant has passed the qualifying Exam where grades are awarded and

· Where the Grade Sheet does not mention the equivalent percentage of marks from grade points, the candidate should submit such a Certificate of conversion from the concerned Institution mentioning either the converted percentage, or the formula for the actual conversion of grade point average to percentage of marks.

· Where the Grade Sheet itself mentions the equivalent percentage of marks from grade points, or the formula for such conversion, the candidate should get both sides of the Degree/Grade Sheet photocopied showing the equivalent percentage of marks/ conversion formula and enclose with the Application Form.

1.8 Application Procedure

The applications for self-financing, ICCR category and casual students containing detailed information/particulars as aforesaid along with the following shall be forwarded to The Deputy Registrar (Academic), IIT Madras, Chennai 600 036, India.

· Xerox copies of certificate of secondary school, Diplomas and Degrees of examination passed. Original certificates should not be sent.

· Attested copies of the syllabi and curricula of the qualifying degree adopted in Colleges/Universities attended with full details. Without this information the application will not be considered.

· Attested copies of TOEFL and GRE/GMAT. In the case of candidates who got degree in India GATE/NET (CSIR/UGC) clearance letter/card.

· Two Letters of Recommendation to be enclosed in the sealed covers certifying the candidate's merit and character.

· 3 copies of bio-data in the prescribed form with passport size photos.

 

On the basis of the letters of admission issued by this Institute, applicants should contact Indian Embassy/High Commission in their respective countries for obtaining Student/ Research Visa for study at IIT Madras. Any foreign national candidate having visa of any other type will be refused admission at IIT Madras. Fees are payable at the time of Registration, failing which, they will not be registered for the programme.

 

2. Casual Studentship

A foreign national student who has registered for an Engineering/Technology degree in a recognized Institute/University in India or abroad is eligible for being considered as a casual student at IIT Madras. He/She should be officially sponsored by the Institute/University where he/she is studying. Such a studentship is granted to carry out research or to avail laboratory or other academic facilities or for attending a formal set of courses, for a maximum period of 6 months.

 

Foreign Students Information System [FSIS] : “Student Registration Card Report” to enable the student to carry out registration with the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO)/Foreigners Registration Officer (FRO).

 

Foreign students reaching IIT Madras, have to report to the Dean International and Alumni Relations, IC & SR Building, IIT Madras and come back to Academic Section to complete the “Student Registration Card Report”, to enable registration with the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO)/Foreigners Registration Officer (FRO). They will be assigned a Roll Number. They will have to apply for Smart ID card in the prescribed proforma available in the Academic Section and also report to the Office of International Relations, IIT Madras at IC & SR Building.

· Such students have to pay US $100 per credit for course work (for SAARC students US $50).

· This charge will be exempted for the students who come from Institutes/Universities which are having Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with this Institute.

· Hostel and Mess charges are separate and are approximately US $350 per semester.

 

Full Time programme students:

 

Admission for Autumn Semester: Applications should reach Academic Section on or before 31st March of every year for Ph.D/M.Tech. & other programmes.

 

Admission for Spring Semester: Applications reach to Academic Section on or before 30th September of every year only for Ph.D. Programme.
